As a photographer, an artist, and even as a writer, color has always played a large role in my visual world. I've caught myself, more than occasionally, mentally mixing color for whatever has caught my eye. Typical artist colors like Cobalt Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Umber, Titanium White, it's almost like I have a color palette in my head with an imaginary paint brush dabbing and mixing colors as I go through my day.

Which brings me to Behr Paint.

Really!

Our spare upstairs bathroom needs to be painted, and I've decided I'd like a pale green with a cool gray undertone. Kind of a light sage-y green. With that specific color in mind, I headed over to Behr's website.

Oh my goodness.

So many greens to choose from. Let's just say I lost maybe an hour (or two) going through the beautiful colors. And the names! Chinese Jade is lovely, but a bit too dark. Moss Mist might work, or maybe Cavan. Morning Zen won't do at all, but I love the name. Emerald Forest is too deep a shade, but again with the evocative name.

I also wandered away from the greens and encountered Ice Drop (a cool, pale gray blue), Moonlit Beach (a warm white with a hint of beige/pink), and Spring Bouquet (a lovely light lavender). So many choices, such imaginative names that immediately pop an image into my mind.

Turns out, Behr Paint is looking for a Color Explorer, to travel the US and Canada this summer. To apply you need to tell them, in 150 words or less, what your favorite color is and why, by May 15, 2019.

Being a Color Explorer sounds fascinating and exciting, but how do you pick just one color? And what about all the various tints, tones, and shades in between?

Some days I feel I'm more drawn to soft pastels, yet in my artwork I tend to gravitate towards those rich jewel tones, for the vibrancy they bring to a piece.

Color, it's all around us, influencing our days, our moods, in so many ways, on so many levels.

The rich colors of a sunset reflected on a lazy river in the panhandle of Florida. Or the warm, reddish brown of a cedar tree's trunk in the San Bernardino Mountains of southern California. Or the cool white of a cherry blossom on a sunny, spring day. Or what about a deep Amethyst purple, layered against a burnished gold backdrop?

Back to our upstairs bathroom, I have found the one, perfect color.

Exactly what I was looking for when I started this search.

Maybe I do have a favorite color, after all.

Whitened Sage.

My favorite color. At least right now, in this moment, for this particular project.

Tomorrow … who knows?
